Periodontology

Periodontology

Periodontology is a branch of dentistry that focuses on the therapeutic and surgical treatment of gum diseases. Gum diseases are widespread today and pose a threat not only to teeth but to the entire body.

The aim of periodontology is the prevention and treatment of inflammatory and non-inflammatory diseases of the supporting tissues around the tooth (such as the gums, bone, etc.). Periodontal diseases include gingivitis (inflammation of the gums), periodontitis (an inflammatory disease characterized by the breakdown of bone surrounding the tooth), gum recession (where the gums recede and expose the roots), and peri-implantitis (inflammation of the tissues around a dental implant).

When Should You See a Periodontist?

You should consult a periodontist immediately if you notice the following symptoms:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Redness of the gums
  • Exposed tooth roots
  • Swollen gums
  • Bad breath
  • Gum pain, itching, or other discomfort
  • Loose teeth
  • Pus discharge from gum pockets

Maintaining healthy gums is one of the main goals of periodontology, which can be achieved through thorough and properly directed oral hygiene. To prevent gum diseases, professional dental cleanings should be performed periodically (every 3-6 months).

Inadequate hygiene or other systemic conditions can lead to the development of gum diseases.
